Research Groups

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

MIT is a world-class educational institution with teaching and research with relevance to the practical world as a guiding principles. Through the Singapore-MIT alliance for research and technology (SMART), a collaborative center for environmental sensing and modeling (CENSAM) has been established. The ARL collaborates with researchers from MIT under the umbrella of CENSAM to develop technologies for marine sensing using autonomous assets such as AUVs.

Kewalo Basin Marine Mammal Laboratory

The Dolphin Institute (TDI) is the not-for-profit arm of the Kewalo Basin Marine Mammal Laboratory in Honolulu, Hawaii. TDI is dedicated to the study and preservation of dolphins, whales, and other marine mammals, and to the education of people whose attitudes and activities affect the survival and well-being of these animals. The ARL works closely with TDI to annual research field trials in the investigation of dolphin sonar techniques, biomimetic sonar, transient signal tracking and analysis.

Ocean Park Hong Kong

A bulk of the Dolphin research at ARL is conducted in collaboration with Ocean Park in Hong Kong. While ARL drives the Dolphin research with its the theoretical and technical expertise, Ocean Park provides the facilities and Dolphins for the research.

Scripps Institution of Oceanography

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) was set up to seek, teach, and communicate scientific understanding of the oceans, atmosphere, Earth, and other planets for the benefit of society and the environment. The ARL worked closely with SIO on a collaborative project involving joint simulation, equipment design, experiment and analysis of a novel shallow-water acoustic TRM experiment in Singapore Waters.

Industry Partners

ST Electronics (Info-comm Systems)

ST Electronics (Info-Comm Systems) Pte Ltd is a leading solutions house in the region providing infocommunications, advanced electronics and intelligent transportation systems to the commercial, government, defence and homeland security sectors worldwide. The ARL has established a collaborative liaison for ST to work with the ARL to identify promising technologies for commercialisation, co-fund initiatives, engineer prototypes, etc.

Seamap

Established in 1987, Seamap designs and develops a range of products for the seismic, hydrographic, and offshore industries with product sales and support bases located in Houston, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. ARL and Seamap work together on development of selected underwater technolgies.

Scientific Solutions Incorporated

Scientific Solutions Incorporated (SSI) is a US based organisation specializing in rapid prototyping of harsh environment instrumentation and ocean-acoustic research. The ARL works with SSI to develop and test selected underwater technologies.

Funding Partners

Agency for Science, Technology & Research

A*STAR fosters world-class scientific research and nurtures scientific talent in Singapore. It aims to boost the economic competitiveness of Singapore through research, science & technology. As part of the research funding programmes, A*STAR funds selected research projects in the ARL.

Defence Science & Technology Agency

DSTA is Singapore's national authority for defence science and technology. It provides leading-edge solutions to the Singapore Armed Forces for the defence and security of Singapore. As part of this mission, DSTA funds research into various areas of underwater acoustic at the ARL.

Maritime and Port Authority

The Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) of Singapore jointly with A*STAR funds projects related to research in off-shore engineering at ARL. Under this funding, the ARL is currently investigating the potential use of networked AUVs for the off-shore industry.
